Memorial to be erected for War veterans in Atiu in the Southern Cook Islands

4:25 pm on 30 March 2009

The dream to build a war monument or Cenotaph to commemorate Atiuan soldiers from the soutthern Cook Islands who served during the first and second world wars has been realised.

The project was coordinated and driven by the Island Secretary, Man Unuia as one of the objectives he set out to meet during the tenure of his office as Atiu's Island Secretary.

Mr Unuia says it will serve as a place to remember those who took part in wars, those who served with the New Zealand Armed Forces as well as those who have served and are still serving with the UN Peace Keeping Forces.

He says families still have time to contact him if they wish to place a plaque on the war monument where next next month's ANZAC Day service will be held.
