Final phase for fibre optic cable in American Samoa begins

10:16 am on 31 March 2009

The fibre optic cable section connecting American Samoa to Hawai'i, landed last week at the Fogagogo site on the main island of Tutuila and is being taken to the cable station site for final installation.

Barry Rose, an official with Pac Rim Redeployment LLC, the company developing the fiber optic cable, says the project is moving along as scheduled.

He says this project and planning have been three years in the making and the execution is being implemented by a highly talented team consisting of off island experts and local contractors.

Weather permitting, Mr Rose says the second cable for the American Samoa to Samoa line should be landed in Apia by tomorrow.

The landing site in Apia is owned and operated by SamoaTel Limited, the principal fixed and mobile carrier in Samoa. The company will construct the cable station.

Mr Rose says the fibre optic cable in American Samoa will be ready for commercial use on April the 15th.
