Fighting in Papua continues according to reports

9:31 am on 1 April 2009

Reports from the Indonesian region of Papua indicate that deadly shootouts continue between the military and the Free West Papua Movement or OPM in Puncak Jaya regency.

Hundreds of extra Indonesian soldiers have been sent to the regency since last month in an operation to attack the OPM in its stronghold district and capture its leaders.

The Chief of the Regional Military Command overseeing Papua region, General Zamroni, told local media that the OPM is losing its foothold in the region and hardly has any weapons to fight with.

But Victor Yeimo of the West Papua National Committee, says despite police reports that only three Indonesians have been killed by OPM in recent weeks, the military is sustaining greater losses.

"They have killed 33 soldiers but you know, Indonesian military, they have hide the number of victims of soldiers from the media. They didn't publish to the media that they have been killed by the OPM."
