8:52 am on 8 April 2009

The 2009 Department of the Interior's Conference on Business Opportunities in the Pacific Islands kicked off yesterday morning at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel in Honolulu.

The Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs, Nikolao Pula, delivered the welcoming remarks for the conference attended by some 100 participants.

Samoa News quotes Mr Pula telling the gathering that economic development conferences for the Pacific Region is not only needed to promote collaboration and increase information sharing between island neighbors, but it's also to partner with potential businesses from around the world.

Mr Pula said that economic development is limited for any small island community far away from the main commerce traffic, and because of that, there is a need to diversify those economic opportunities as they are vital and critical for the survival of the Pacific nations.
