New Caledonia's pro-independece camp divided in south as elections loom

Moves of New Caledonian pro-independence parties to form a single electoral list for the May election in the southern province have so far been unsuccessful.

The political spectrum is divided into parties seeking independence from France and those against it.

The lack of unity has in the last election five years ago prevented pro-independence parties from winning representation in the economically dominant southern province.

Our correspondent, Claudine Wery, says the pro-independence parties had a meeting last weekend near the capital, Noumea.

"Many leaders came to this meeting but they didn't find any agreement to form a common list for the election. The problem for the independentists is that they have to be unified to obtain seats."

Claudine Wery says candidates standing in the election are expected to be nominated on April 19th.
