Fiji's Bainimarama appeals for calm

5:37 am on 10 April 2009

In Fiji, the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has met with the President Ratu Josefa Iloilo on the Court of Appeal decision that the interim government is illegal.

The Commodore informed Ratu Josefa of the 'practical implications' of the decision that a caretaker prime minister be appointed to take the country back to national elections.

Commodore Bainimarama also labelled the three judges' decision not to stay their own decision 'unfortunate'.

Addressing the nation last night, Commodore Bainimarama also appealed for calm in the country.

"I appeal to all of you, that you must be loyal and patriotic citizens of of our beloved country. Please do not be strayed by pity and ethnic politics or considerations."
