Ratu Josefa Iloilo re-appoints Fiji's military commander to lead country for five years

Fiji's President Ratu Josefa Iloilo has re-appointed the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, as the interim prime minister.

The move comes less than 48 hours after the Court of Appeal had ruled that Commodore Bainimarama's appointment had been unlawful.

The Court of Appeal had found that on the basis of the constitution, Ratu Josefa lacked the powers to validate the interim regime that had been installed after the 2006 military coup led by Commodore Bainimarama.

On Friday, Ratu Josefa said he had abrogated the constitution, dismissed the judiciary and made himself the head of state who now rules by decree.

Ratu Josefa says a new legal order is in place and that elections will be held in September 2014 at the latest.

This morning, Ratu Josefa proceeded to swear in the Commodore as the new interim prime minister.

The Commodore in turn has reappointed key ministers of the previous interim administration, including the defence minister Ratu Epeli Ganilau and the attorney-general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

This is the third post-coup government, and the second led by Commodore Bainimarama.

The first one lasted just under a month and was led by Jona Senilagakali who was sworn in by the Commodore who for a month purported to be the President.
