The United Nations Security Council is demanding that Fiji moves towards democracy and hold elections as soon as possible.
The Security Council met this morning in New York to discuss Fiji.
After a briefing from U.N. political department chief B. Lynn Pascoe, the Security Council said it was deeply concerned about the situation in Fiji, where undemocratic decisions were made, including the abrogation of the constitution.
The council's current president, Mexico's Ambassador, Claude Heller, says the situation now in Fiji is a step backwards.
She says the council's 15 members expressed hopes that Fiji would make a steadfast move towards democracy and that free elections would be held at the soonest possible time.
