The US Coast Guard is reported to be searching for a family, missing since Saturday while on a sea trip to Rota from Guam.

The Pacific News Center reports that the family was travelling on a catamaran, when a Guam caller claiming to be the boat's operator called the Saipan Emergency Management Office to report that one of the engines failed in rough seas.

A Coast Guard boat was dispatched on Saturday night but no trace of the family was found.

A US Navy helicopter has since been sent out to conduct an aerial search.

The department says it's unclear how many family members were on board.

Furthermore, the Coast Guard's office says it's been unable to identify the boat operator with the information provided to the emergency management office.
