5:30 am on 27 April 2009

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister has announced a five-member Truth and Reconciliation Commission to probe the causes of the ethnic unrest between 1998 and 2003.

The five-member team includes three locals.

The national commissioners are the Reverend Sam Ata from Malaita Province, George Kejoa from Guadalcanal and Caroline Laore from the Shortlands in Western Province.

The two non-national commissioners are Fiji's former vice president, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, and Sofia Macher from Peru.

The Commission begins its work this week and will be launched by Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa.
