Social Service agency in Fiji pleas for foreign aid assistance to continue

New Zealand has been asked not to abandon social service groups in Fiji under the policies giving a new direction for aid money.

The Director of Fiji's Council for Social Services, Hassan Khan, says there are many sectors in Fiji that need help, especially in this period of political turmoil.

Mr Khan says the organisations he works with are trying to find a way forward:

"Working with the civil society organisations is what is necessary right now. Do not abandon us, we are trying to engage that way and I think we can do more and achieve more through engagement and dialogue than through sanctions and other things."

Mr Khan is hopeful that the multi sector President's Dialogue Forum, planned before the abrogation of the constitution, will still go ahead.
