Fiji interim government mum on number of detainees held under emergency provisions

3:20 pm on 28 April 2009

Fiji's government spokesman refuses to say how many people have been detained in relation to alleged destabilising activities.

At least five men, including a prominent nationalist Iliesa Duvuloco, and two other prominent people, have been arrested and are being held in Suva and in the Western Division.

Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni says they are likely to face a charge of incitement under the emergency regulations, and how long they are held will depend on the progress of the investigations

He says the men were arrested over some leaflets distributed in the rural areas of Fiji's main island carrying anti-government messages.

"I wouldn't really want to speculate. Like I said the investigations are ongoing and it's for the lawyers and people who know more about the law than I do to be able to decide whether it is inciting or not, but from a layman's term, we can call it incitement."

Lieutenant Colonel Leweni will not confirm who the men are, except to say they are people who are trying to destabilise the country.
