Transparency International Solomon Islands says the Truth and Reconciliation Commission should focus on finding the truth rather than the causes of the ethnic unrest it is investigating.
The Commission is being launched this morning to hear the stories of people caught up in the violence in which 100 people died between 1998 and 2003.
Transparency chairperson Bob Pollard says the Commission will give victims the chance to tell the truth so reconciliation can take place.
He says this is more important than identifying the causes of the conflict, which he says are fairly obvious.
"The term which is just bandied about here is root causes and I think there's been an over-emphasis on finding what these root causes are. Obviously there's some basic issues, but this isn't primarily about finding the root causes of conflict, its about understanding when we turn away from the rule of law to try and address the social problems we have it leads us to a much worse situation."
Bob Pollard says the catalysts for the unrest included economic justice issues, pressure over land, and the breakdown of law in the villages.
