An appeal court in New Caledonia has acquitted a local man who had been found guilty of murder over the killing of a Japanese woman seven years ago.

Antoine Konhu had been sentenced to 15 years in jail in 2007 but on appeal the sentence was quashed.

The defence says no evidence was presented to make the case against Mr Konhu who, along with his brother, had been accused of killing the Japanese tourist in the Isle of Pines.

His brother had already been acquitted in the first trial.

The body of the 28-year-old victim was found three days after she was reported missing.
