The Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands has warned of great danger in the two countries if their governments don't focus on the plight of the poor.

The newspaper, the Post Courier, reports that following their meeting in Wewak last week, the Bishops say that the worldwide economic crisis could worsen problems of unemployment and mean less money is available for rural development.

Marking its 50th anniversary, the Conference said that it had witnessed great progress in the standard of living in the two countries during this time but that the crisis could place this progress in grave danger.

It's called for responsible action to make sure those in the lowest income sector can maintain a decent standard of living.
