Solomon Islands launches Economic Advisory Council

9:51 pm on 12 May 2009

The Solomon Islands Acting Prime Minister Fred Fono MP has launched the Solomon Islands Economic Advisory Council in Honiara .

The Economic Advisory Council is a high-level non-political 'think tank' of persons set up to bring to government and public attention views on economic development issues that are relevant to Solomon Islands.

Members of the Council are citizens of Solomon Islands, including representatives of major investments in the country.

Mr Fono said government believes it is important to hear the views of those experienced in economics and development since all Solomon Islanders live with results of policies that are adopted and implemented by government.

While it is inaugurated, appointed and resourced by the Government of Solomon Islands, the Council is required, in its deliberations and discussions, to be independent of government as it consults widely.

Mr Fono said the Government will listen to and consider the Council's advice and will explain reasons for any decision not to heed the advice.

The Economic Advisory Council immediately held its first meeting after Tuesday's launching ceremony.
