The Micronesia Conservation Trust is bidding for a lucrative U.S. military contract for environmental mitigation work.
This comes as the US military plans to relocate 8,000 marines from Okinawa Japan to Guam by 2014.
The U.S. Defence department is putting aside environmental funds to look at the impact of the military relocation on neighbouring island states.
Our correspondent in Marshall Islands, Giff Johnson, says the local environmental trust is bidding hard to get the contract.
"The Defence department is putting aside a significant amount of money, a percentage of the billions of dollars that are going into the transfer of marines from Okinawa to Guam, they're putting in quite a lot of money for environmental mitigation. And apparently this isn't just related to Guam but it relates to neighbouring islands that may have some impact by this big move to Guam. And so the Micronesia Conservation Trust is looking to bid to be the manager of these funds, which would just be a huge thing for a Micronesia based entity."
