Indonesian police to investigate Papuan airfield seizure

3:23 pm on 20 May 2009

Reports from Indonesia say suspected Papuan separatists have occupied an airstrip in Kasepo, some 300 kilometers from the provincial capital Jayapura.

The Jakarta Globe reports that they erected a tent and flew the banned separatist Morning Star flag.

It quotes the Papua Police Chief Inspector General Bagus Ekodanto as saying three groups of the anti-terror squad is to be sent to the area to ascertain what is happening.

Communication links are poor and the area is now only accessible by helicopter or speedboat.

The police are to determine whether those occupying the airfield are rebels or locals demonstrating over unspecified grievances.
