Vanuatu province the first to adopt CEDAW

Shefa Province has become the first Provincial Council in Vanuatu to adopt the principles of the Convention on Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, or CEDAW.

The Daily Post reports that the adoption of thse principles under the leadership of the Shefa President, LamiSope, is intended to be a platform for action to advance women and people with disabilities in the province.

The Shefa council has also recently approved the Convention on the Rights of Persons, with Disability.

Shefa councillors are already attending workshops on the two conventions.

The Vanuatu Government ratified CEDAW in 1995.

Shefa Provincial Council is the first Council to incorporate CEDAW's recommendations in its development plan for the province.
