Papua New Guinea's Disaster Management Office says local authorities are today planning to fly into the area hit by a landslide.

Villagers from the area walked for hours to report the lanslide that hit the Sialim district in Morobe, telling the authorities that 19 people have been buried.

The office's acting director, Martin Mose, says his office has organised a helicopter to help local staff assess the situation on the ground.

"The arrangement was for the team that moves in they will also bring immediately some tarpaulins. They probably won't carry food by now, probably I would assume that in that point of time they are being cared for by the immediate relatives."

Martin Mose says it's still unclear how many people have been affected.
