Samoa chiefs urged to support campaign against incest and rape

Samoa's Victim Support Group says they need village matais or chiefs to support their nation-wide awareness campaign about incest and rape.

A spokesperson Viliamu Paese says something has to be done to curb the number of teenage girls being raped by male family members.

He says one of the more common reasons for the unwanted male behaviour involves alcohol abuse and lack of education.

He admits incest is a sensitive topic, but says they hope they can make a difference if they make more people aware of the issues and of the penalties perpetrators can face.

"That is what we plan to do but we have to work together with some of the villages, especially the matais. We have to have consultations first before we move in to actually performing the programme. But I hope that most of the people are going to like it and its good for them to know what is happening."
