American Samoa's census is expected to create new jobs and pump new money into the economy.

Three officials of the US Census Bureau are in the territory this week to finalise a contract with the American Samoa Government for the 2010 census.

The counting is scheduled to begin in March but hiring of census staff should begin next month.

Julia Buckley of the US Census Bureau says the first 600,000 US dollar installment for the census preparations should be in ASG's coffers by the end of this month .

The latest population estimate for American Samoa from last year is 69,000.
