CNMI considers pay hike to retain doctors

4:46 pm on 5 June 2009

The Department of Public Health in the Northern Marianas is considering raising the salaries of some physicians at the Commonwealth Health Center.

This comes after a series of resignations in recent months which has left positions for a pathologist, a psychiatrist and a radiologist vacant.

The acting health secretary, Pete Untalan, says in a highly competitive environment such as the medical sector, there has to be attention paid to recruitment.

Mr Untalan says the CNMI being isolated is a challenge but not having competitive salaries is a problem when recruiting.
