The Solomon Islands Governor General designate, Frank Kabui, says his election yesterday to the highest position in the land came as no surprise to him.

He says he was approached by MPs and knew that they faith and confidence in him, though he had never aligned himself with any political grouping.

Mr Kabui says, previously, it had not occurred to him that he could become Head of State.

Mr Kabui says although his role as Head of State will be ceremonial, he will go into office with a wealth of experience from his more than 30 years in the legal profession.

He was the first Solomon Islands law graduate, completing his degree at the University of Papua New Guinea in 1975.
