Two French Polynesian assembly members risk losing seats

9:33 am on 18 June 2009

Press reports in French Polynesia suggest that two assembly members from the Tuamotu islands are at risk of losing their seats following deliberations in the French supreme court.

The rulings are yet to be released but Tahiti newspapers report that Teina Maraeura is set to be stripped of his seat for failing to give an accurate account of his interests.

Mr Maraeura declined to comment on the Paris ruling, saying he was still to see his lawyer.

Michel Yip has been accused of corruption by fellow assembly members but he has told a local paper that he was far from being alone in hiring family members to public sector jobs.
