Samoa police probe escape of recaptured inmate

10:24 am on 20 June 2009

A police investigation is underway in Samoa after a prisoner, serving a life sentence for murder, escaped just a day after being recaptured from two months on the run.

The assistant police commissioner, Papalii Li'o, confirmed the recapture of Iosua Savusa but would not divulge further details.

However, police sources say the inmate was taken to police headquarters by matais from the village of Faleatiu after successful police negotiations involving the village council and members of the prisoner's family.

The inmate was reportedly taken to Tafaigata prison on Tuesday from where he escaped on arrival.
