Staff and patients happy with refurbished Honiara health clinic

A nurse at a clinic that's to re-open in the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, says it had been in such a state of disrepair it was not good for the health of patients or staff.

The Vura Clinic is one of nine around the city being repaired after previous councils failed to carry out any maintenance on them for more than 20 years.

Nurse Elsie Maelava says before the clinic was renovated it had broken glass, a leaking ceiling, and a broken sink and toilets.

She says the patients have noticed the difference.

"They really appreciate how the clinic looks. They say this is very good. Our clinic is clean and the atmosphere they really appreciate. I as a nurse, I'm glad too that I work in this clinic and they do the renovations."

The upgrading of clinics is part of an NZAID-funded project to improve the functioning of the council and the services it provides.
