The Solomon Islands fee free schools policy has received a second financial boost from the New Zealand Government.

New Zealand has announced a second payment of just over one million US dollars bringing its total contribution to the policy to two point two million US dollars.

The Education Minister Matthew Wale thanked New Zealand for continuing to support the policy despite the global recession.

"Solomon Islands is grateful that even in these trying times New Zealand has remained committed to the stated commitments to the people and government of Solomon Islands. It is no small matter what we are witnessing here today."

Matthew Wale says there has been a six percent increase in primary enrolment and a four-point-eight percent increase in secondary enrolment since the fee free policy was introduced.

He says it is a challenge to meet the demand for more classrooms, teachers and materials but his Ministry is determined to address the impacts of the policy with stakeholders and development partners.
