SPC discusses Youth Festival with Fiji regime

2:23 pm on 23 June 2009

The Director General of the Secretariat of Pacific Community is meeting Fiji's interim regime this afternoon to discuss the upcoming Pacific Youth Festival.

Dr Jimmy Rogers is expected to talk about the vision and spirit that are behind such a gathering and it follows restrictions being placed on the meeting.

The interim regime has already unofficially banned some facilitators chosen to conduct sessions such as the former Vice President, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, and representatives of the Young People Concerned Network.

Our correspondent in Suva, Matelita Ragogo, attended the previous festival in French Polynesia and says the environment there was totally different:

"There was absolutely no restrictions, nothing of that sort. You know, there was no media clamping or restrictions on what you could say in public and what you couldn't, it was just free."

All speeches at the Festival must first be vetted by Fiji's Ministry of Information.

The gathering of Pacific young is due to be held in mid July
