Pacific people in NZ urged to seek authorised advice on permits, visas

9:08 pm on 23 June 2009

An immigration consultant from South Auckland is calling for Pacific people to go to licensed consultants or Immigration New Zealand to seek out legitmate advice on getting permits or visas.

The call comes as police investigate a fake visa scam run by a Maori sovereignty activist which targeted Pacific people in the country.

Ueite Letalu from Letalu Immigration Company Limited in Otahuhu says that those who fall for such scams are in the country illegally and will do anything to stay and Pacific people are especially vulnerable.

"Sometimes the communication problem. Perhaps most or some of them, wouldn't understand how to translate and in any writing I suppose like in pamphlets and in any information given out to them. And also out in their community sort of wherever they hear perhaps somebody saying something about them going to get free permits or visas or whatever from somewhere, they'll just go for it rather than seeking out the right source of information."
