6.7 quake strikes PNG's New Ireland area

The US Geological Survey says a major undersea earthquake with a 6.7 magnitude has struck off the New Ireland area of Papua New Guinea .

It said the epicentre of the quake, which struck early this morning was located 95 kilometres south-southeast of Taron, New Ireland.

It took place at a depth of 35 kilometres.
