Police in Samoa charge prisoner with procuring own miscarriage

3:52 pm on 24 June 2009

A female prisoner in Samoa has been charged with one count of procuring her own miscarriage.

Ruby Slade appeared in court this week and her case has been adjourned to next month for her lawyer to consider the charge before she enters a plea.

Police say the incident was committed outside of Tafaigata prison during a weekend parole visit to her family.

The police allege a former nurse, who was convicted and jailed in 2004 for procuring an abortion, had assisted the prisoner.

The former nurse, Akalita Apelu, is separately charged with one count of procuring an abortion and her trial is set to begin in January next year.
