Samoa Supreme Court declares murder case a mistrial

8:26 pm on 24 June 2009

A Supreme Court judge in Samoa has declared a mistrial in the case of a former police officer, Tapumanaia Filipo Langkilde, who is facing a murder charge over the death of a man in June last year.

The presiding judge, Lesatele Rapi Va'ai, has ruled a mistrial after state lawyers prosecuting the case challenged the credibility of two of the four assessors.

He has ordered for a new panel of assessors and a judge to rehear the matter on a date to be set by the court next month.
