Forum chair expects Fiji leader to renege on road map undertaking

6:47 pm on 9 July 2009

The chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, Toke Talagi of Niue, says he doubts Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, will keep to the road map providing for an election in 2014.

The date was announced in Suva last week after the Fiji leader reneged on a 2007 promise to relinquish power to an elected government this year.

Mr Talagi, who is Niue's premier, says the Fiji leader cannot be trusted because he has changed his mind so often.

He says he thinks Commodore Bainimarama is happy with what he's got at the moment and he will continue with that.

Mr Talagi made the comment during a brief visit by the New Zealand prime minister, John Key.
