Solomon Islands PM has concerns over land dealings

11:23 am on 16 July 2009

The Solomon Islands prime minister has told Parliament the Government is concerned about alleged dubious land dealings by officers in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey.

Dr Derek Sikua said the alleged land dealings impact on sites the Government requires for its housing projects in the capital, Honiara and in the provincial centres.

Dr Sikua said because of the serious allegations against lands officers the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey, Ruth Liloqula, has been assigned to supervise the Commissioner of Lands' post.

He said the Cabinet had endorsed her assignment.

He made the statements while clarifying concerns raised by the Opposition Leader, Manasseh Sogavare who wanted to know how soon work on a police post in east Honiara would start.

Dr Sikua said the Ministry of Public Service will be asked to probe into the allegations against land officers because the Government is determined to clean up the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey.
