Indonesian group says 2002 Timika killings unresolved

Indonesia's Human Rights Watch group suspects soldiers involved in the 2002 Freeport killings are still in Timika where there were deadly attacks on employees of the Freeport-run mine at the weekend.

This comes as police have launched a hunt for the perpetrators of the latest attacks which left three people dead near the mine.

The 2002 attack, which left three Freeport employees dead, was also the result of an ambush using security forces weaponry in the same area as the weekend shootings.

FBI and Indonesian investigators found that Papuan separatists were behind the 2002 attack but local rights groups have long maintained the military had a hand in the killings.

Human Rights Watch's Andreas Harsono believes the military elements that staged the 2002 attack are still at large.

"The 2002 [attack] was not properly investigated, was not properly tried, and now we have a new case. I think it's time to talk about the 2002 shooting. Why? It is not satisfactory. Officially, the FBI - until today - has not closed the 2002 investigation yet."
