FSM president calls for dialogue with Fiji interim regime

2:33 pm on 24 July 2009

The President of the Federated States of Micronesia, Emanuel Mori, has spoken out in favour of including Fiji in the Pacific Islands Forum to maintain a dialogue.

Mr Mori has told Radio Australia that he would rather see Fiji continue to be a part of the Forum in order to be able to talk and convince Fiji to return to democratic processes.

Fiji was suspended from the Forum in May after its interim regime refused to commit to relinquishing power by holding elections this year.

Mr Mori's comments follow this month's meeting of the Melanesian Spearhead Group which endorsed the Fiji interim regime's plan to put off elections until 2014.

He says he doesn't think it's a realistic option to isolate Fiji.

The Fiji interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, refused to attend the Forum summits in Niue last year and in Papua New Guinea this year.
