Fiji has begun preparations for a military and traditional Fijian farewell for outgoing Fiji President Ratu Josefa Iloilo.

Ratu Josefa, 88, is to take a month's leave from today before he officially retires from office.

Ratu Josefa's secretary Rupeni Nacewa, who is also retiring this week, tells Fiji Live the Prime Minister's Office is working on the President's farewell arrangements.

Fiji's vice President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, will perform the functions of the President until a substantive appointment is made by the Chief Justice upon the advice and nomination of the Cabinet.
