Calls in American Samoa for review of overtime costs for staff at airport

3:24 pm on 31 July 2009

American Samoa based Inter island airlines is calling for a review of overtime costs for government personnel on duty at the airport.

In the past, the airline only had to pay for customs officials on duty.

But now the departments of agriculture and health are also billing them for any flights that arrive before 7:30am or after 4:00 pm.

The overtime charges have been raised from 12.50 US to 20 dollars for each government employee on duty after hours.

A spokesperson for the airline, South Pacific Express, agrees, and says the overtime charges need to be reviewed.

Samoa's national carrier, Polynesian airlines, has hinted that it may have to pass the added costs on to passengers.

Its ceo, Taua Fatu Tielu, says he has written to the American Samoa Health and Agriculture Departments asking for fewer inspectors to check its aircraft.

Hawaiian Airlines also has to pay the overtime charges on their flight nights.
