Niuean police have confirmed that a policewoman holidaying in Tonga is among those missing in the Tongan ferry disaster.

Niue's Chief of Police Ross Ardern says his police staff are in a state of shock and the community is devastated at the loss.

"It's been a huge shock for this really small community. It's a very close and tight community and something as devastating as this has quite a marked effect. Not only the fact that a Niuean person is believed to have been involved in the incident and is lost as a result of the tragedy, but their hearts go out to the people of Tonga as well."

Commander Ardern says the name of the Niuean policewoman will be released once relatives in New Zealand and Australia have been contacted.
