Police in Vanuatu have called off the hunt for a New Zealand man alleged to have tried to kill his partner on board a yacht in Port Vila harbour last week.

They say the man, who has been named, managed to fly to New Zealand before he could be questioned.

Inspector Ron Tamtam says he has been in contact with the suspect and is expecting to receive a sworn statement from him.

Inspector Tamtam says at this stage, the man is facing a charge of attempted murder.

The man's partner, who is also the owner of the yacht, claims that she was locked in, the ventilation was closed off and acid was left in the cabin.
