Prison escapees in Samoa appear in court

10:21 am on 13 August 2009

In Samoa, most of the 41 prisoners who escaped in May from Tafa'igata prison appeared in the District court this week.

Most of them pleaded guilty to charges of armed with machetes, threatening words, and escaping from police custody.

However, several of them have denied some of the charges and the court has set November for hearing while those who pleaded guilty will be sentenced in October.

During the prison escape in May, the inmates had managed to get on a bus heading to the government buildings but they didn't reach there as police had shot at the vehicle's tyres forcing it to stop.
