American Samoa's Togiola banks on nominees despite Fono rejection

Five American Samoan cabinet appointments rejected by the Fono early this year are going through the confirmation process again after Governor Togiola Tulafono re-appointed the individuals.

The director-appointees are for the Department of Agriculture, Department of Health, Office of Public Information, Territorial Administration on Aging and Territorial Energy Office.

Togiola maintains that he has confidence in the nominees to head these government agencies, saying each of the nominees has the sufficient background to serve as directors.

All five nominees were rejected early this year by the House but were confirmed by the Senate.

To be fully confirmed as cabinet director, the nominee must be approved by both the Senate and the House.

The confirmation hearings are set for this week and if anyone is again rejected, the governor will have no choice, under the law, but to appoint a new director.
