Solomons Immigration denies Fijians attended Cairns Forum on Solomons passports

The Solomon Islands Immigration Department says it found no evidence that two Fiji nationals sneaked into the recent Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Australia on Solomon Islands passports.

The department carried out an investigation after a reporter of Papua New Guinea's Post Courier newspaper said she had spoken with two advisers to the Fiji government who showed her their Solomons passports.

The two reportedly attended the event in Cairns despite Fiji's suspension from the Forum and Australia's bans on the Fiji regime's key members.

The director of the Solomon Islands Immigration Department, Jeffery Deve, says the department has found no evidence of any Fiji nationals gaining a Solomon Islands passport to enter Australia, adding that the country does not offer dual citizenship.

Mr Deve says there was insufficient information in the investigation as the names of the two Fijians were not disclosed.

The PNG journalist, Gorethy Kenneth, says she would not reveal the identity of the men as they only spoke to her on condition she would not reveal their names.

The Fiji government has labelled the newspaper report a rumour, saying that in the absence of any evidence, it cannot elaborate on the matter.
