An open-ended strike has begun in French Polynesia after unsuccessful talks between the main unions and the territory's government.
The strike warning issued last week became effective at midnight after about six hours of discussions last night ended without an accord.
The stoppage is likely to affect transport most heavily.
The unions say the economy needs a boost as at least 5,000 jobs have been lost in recent times.
A union leader says a common approach needs to be found, involving the French state, the territorial government as well as the employers and unions.
Mr Galenon says he knows that the public has trouble understanding some of the issues but he says once conditions have worsened it will be too late.
