Samoa drive switch opponents boast financial support

Opponents of the Samoan government's plans to switch the driving side say they've raised thousands of dollars to fund their legal challenge to the change.

Motorists in Samoa will have to drive on the left side of the road instead of the right from September the 7th.

But the lobby group Pass is arguing in the Supreme Court that the change is unconstitutional on safety grounds.

Our correspondent in Apia, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says the group told him they have raised more than 12,000 US dollars or 33,000 tala to fund their case.

"Contributions from supporters and also donations from the United States, with a donation coming from New Zealand very soon. So in two weeks they raised 33,000 tala to help out with their preparation of the case, and also to pay for airfares and accommodation for their two witnesses from overseas."

Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says the first witness heard by the court yesterday said there will be a dramatic increase in road crashes following the switch.
