The census period in New Caledonia has been extended by a week.
Radio New Caledonia says the census was to be completed this week but for a variety of reasons this has been extended until the end of next week.
Among the factors have been the disruptions in recent weeks by strikes and blockades as well as the prevalence of influenza which has struck down many people involved in the exercise.
The areas most affected by the delays are in the greater Noumea area.
