MSG reiterates backing for Fiji to take part in PACER Plus negotiations

5:54 pm on 25 August 2009

Melanesian Spearhead Group foreign ministers have re-affirmed the body's position that Fiji must be included in negotiations on the PACER Plus trade deal.

The foreign ministers say that the MSG is opposed to the potential economic fragmentation of the Pacific and Fiji's exclusion from regional trade related meetings.

The four member countries, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Fiji are also considering a sub regional approach to pursuing PACER Plus negotiations.

The move by the MSG countries follow the decision by the Pacific Islands Forum leaders to exclude Fiji from the PACER Plus negotiations in the wake of the interim Government's suspension from the Forum over its delay in a return to democracy.
