The mayor of the Samoan village of Laulii where road signs for the road switch have been tampered with suspects the vandalism is the work of unscrupulous youth.

He has denied claims that village chiefs ordered the youth to damage road signs.

The Samoa Observer newspaper yesterday carried a photo depicting scribbling in white chalk on the road, which attacked the Prime Minister.

The Laulii pulenuu said that those responsible will be dealt with by police.

He said those responsible did it on their own free will and the police are looking for all of them.

He said one of the suspects has fled to American Samoa.
