Ending of generator contract in CNMI could save millions

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation in the Northern Marianas is expected to make a huge saving from its move to end its power generator contract with Aggreko.

Since last September, the CUC has been paying the major global power rental firm a little over US$500,000 a month for the rental of power generators.

The CUC has been plagued by financial problems over the years and was also placed under a disaster emergency declaration by the Governor.

The company has also been carrying out repairs on its generators after a series of power blackouts in the CNMI.

The executive director of the CUC, Antonio Muna, says the savings the company will be used in other areas of the company.

"Now we have monies freed up to focus on other things that we need to improve."

Antonio Muna says this is just the first step in its need to improve services.
